A set of masks for a P-51D model in 1:32 scale. A double cut of the glazing covers the canopy outside and inside, and three national insignia go with it.
Responsibility details are not available.
A Mustang in 1:32 is a large model and its build has a logical sequence that is worth keeping to. The set of masks enters it at the moment when the camouflage is finished but the surface has not yet received its final treatment.
Sprayed insignia have to come before decals, for two reasons. First, paint is sprayed under the mask and its mist would settle on decals already in place and cloud them. Second, after the mask is lifted the edge is often refined by light sanding, which a thin decal film would not survive. Anyone who reverses this order usually ends up removing smeared markings from a spot where nothing can be repaired without respraying the whole panel.
The sensible sequence therefore runs: primer, camouflage, masks and the spraying of the insignia, lifting the films, a gloss intermediate coat, decals with the small captions, weathering and finally the chosen degree of matte. Every step then works on a surface that suits it and none sabotages the next.
The broad recognition bands around the fuselage and wings are masked with ordinary masking tape, because their width and position varied from aircraft to aircraft and no pre-cut film covers them universally. This delivery aims at the glazing and at the national insignia, that is at elements with a fixed shape.
Keep the films in their original packaging until you apply them, so that dust does not settle on the adhesive layer.
