This sheet in 1:72 scale from the anniversary series for the landings covers three different American self-propelled support weapons at once: the M7 Priest howitzer carrier, the light M8 HMC and the Sherman version with the 105mm howitzer. It is an addition to a finished model, which gives it membership of a particular unit.
The M7 Priest set a 105mm howitzer on the chassis of a medium tank and the cylindrical ring mount for a heavy machine gun on the right side of the hull became its recognition feature. The M8 HMC, by contrast, came into being on the basis of the light Stuart and in an open turret carried a short 75mm howitzer for direct support. The Sherman with the 105mm howitzer then filled the role of an assault gun in the headquarters platoons of tank battalions. Three levels of fire support, from light to tank, thus stand side by side.
On self-propelled guns most of the markings lie on the flat sides and at the rear, so the work goes well. It pays, though, to proceed one design at a time and let each one dry, because moving a wet drawing across a varnished area readily drags the neighboring one along too. With open fighting compartments keep an eye on the edge of the film, so that it does not run over onto the inner wall of the hull tub.
