This kit from the Takom brand is not a model of a ship. It is a gun turret on its own in the large 1:35 scale, specifically a secondary turret of the battleship Bismarck with a pair of 15 cm SK C/28 guns, in the form corresponding to the Bb II and Stb II positions, that is the second turret on the port and on the starboard side. The large scale makes it possible to show details that are lost on a model of a whole ship, from the shaping of the armored box to the mounting of the barrels. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The 15 cm SK C/28 gun made up the secondary armament of large German surface vessels. It was mounted in an armored twin turret that trained independently of the hull and had its own ammunition supply from below deck. The designations Bb and Stb refer to the port and the starboard side, and the number to the order of the turret from the bow. The secondary battery served against smaller vessels and complemented the main artillery, which had a markedly larger caliber and range.
A large scale forgives fewer mistakes: sand and fill the seams of the armored box carefully, because every imperfection shows on flat surfaces. Spray the whole assembly with a primer before painting, which will also reveal the places that need more sanding. It pays to mix the gray naval finish with slight transitions of shade so that the surface does not look flat; a light overspray with a lighter tone in the middle of the larger areas helps as well. A flowing wash and a dry brush on the edges and rivets will draw out the detail. You can emphasize the barrels with a fine metallic shade at the muzzles, and wear of the paint on the walkways will then give the model its sense of scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. This is not a model of the whole ship but of its gun turret.
