A photo-etched detail set for a model of the AH-1Z attack helicopter in 1:35 scale. The metal parts replace thicker plastic shapes where the material should be thin.
Responsibility details are not available.
The AH-1Z is a US Marine Corps attack helicopter and the youngest member of the Cobra family. The crew of two sit one behind the other in a narrow fuselage, the main rotor has four blades and the machine stands on skids. It carries its armament on stub wings and in a turret under the nose, so even as a model it is a type packed with small technical detail.
The set is made up of photo-etched metal parts that are cut from the fret one by one. Etching makes it possible to produce features in a thickness a plastic part cannot come near: grilles, textured panels, loops, hinges and thin rims. The position of the individual parts on the model is shown in the manufacturer's instructions that come with the set.
Cut the parts off with a sharp blade on a hard surface and sand the remains of the connecting tab down with a fine file. Make the bends along the marked score lines, ideally in a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge stays sharp and straight. Degrease the metal before gluing, otherwise paint will not hold on it. It is glued with super glue, or with two-part epoxy, which gives more time to set the part in place. Where an etched part is to go, first level the plastic detail down so that the part seats on a flat surface.
The set is an accessory to a kit; check its compatibility against the manufacturer's instructions. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
