The photo-etched set in 1:35 scale from the Czech maker Hauler is cut for the kit of the light off-road car given in the name of the product and turns it into a field-modified, armored version. It is an accessory, not a model. Additional plating is exactly the type of detail that fails in plastic: real armor has a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter in 1:35 scale, so photo-etched sheet comes far closer to reality than a molding.
The light off-road car of the quarter-ton category was the basic liaison and reconnaissance means of the American army. The units modified it in the field as they needed - they added protective plates in front of the crew and to the sides, moved the equipment about and changed the mounting of the gear. Such modifications differed from piece to piece, so it is as well to base the particular form on a period photograph if you are building one specific machine.
The order is the key: seat the photo-etched parts of the plating and the brackets before you varnish the car, but finish the interior and the instrument panel before that, because once the plates are mounted you will not reach them. Anneal the photo-etched sheet before bending, so that it holds its shape and does not spring. Make the joints with super glue in small doses, and wipe the surplus off with a brush and acetone before it dries. For the painting an olive base coat suits, with a thin dark wash into the corners and drybrushing on the edges of the plates; only suggest bare metal in the places the crew reached for.
The set completes a kit; it is not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
