The M113 is an American tracked armored personnel carrier that was deployed in large numbers during the war in Vietnam and is among the best-known machines of the fighting there. The set is aimed thematically at a display with a destroyed carrier, that is at a scene after a hit, with churned-up ground and the traces of combat around it.
The base is a ready terrain ground in 1:35 scale. It gives a diorama shape and firm boundaries, so the slow business of layering terrain from filler falls away and you can concentrate on painting, aging and the arrangement of the hardware and the figures. A solid edge also holds the scene together and makes carrying a finished diorama easier.
Wash and degrease the surface before painting, so that the paint holds well. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the base and sand off the rest. Choose the glue and the paints according to the material of the base; the particular procedure can be found in the manufacturer's instructions. The molded relief of the terrain stands out when you darken the base shade with a glaze drawn into the recesses and run a dry brush over the upper edges.
For modelers who are building a Vietnam diorama in 1:35 scale and want terrain with a story under their hardware instead of a bare board. Even a less experienced builder will manage it, because the most demanding part of the work, shaping the terrain, is done.
