A plastic kit of a light liaison aircraft in 1:35 scale. The designation C-3/Trop corresponds to the version adapted for operating in dusty, hot surroundings. A scale of 1:35 is unusual for an aircraft, but it matches the scale of kits of ground hardware and figures exactly, so the model is ideal for a diorama with vehicles. Thanks to the size of the parts the build is easier to follow than in the usual aviation scales.
The Fi 156 Storch is a single-engine high-wing monoplane of the late 1930s, built around a welded tube frame fuselage covered with fabric. Its reputation rests on the highly effective high-lift devices of the wing: fixed leading-edge slats along the whole span and large landing flaps brought the stall speed down so far that the aircraft took off and landed on a very short strip, and in a stronger headwind it could hold almost on the spot. Power came from an air-cooled inverted V8 Argus. The tall landing gear with its long-travel shock absorbers allowed operation from unprepared ground, and the glazed cabin with its bulged side panels gave the crew a view straight downward as well. The machine served on liaison, observation and casualty evacuation duties.
The most demanding spot is the cabin glazing, of which there is a great deal and through which the inside is clearly visible. So finish and paint the interior before the fuselage is closed, and mask the window frames with strips of masking tape or with a liquid mask. Glue the wing struts and the landing gear legs only once the main assemblies have dried, and keep checking the angles. The fabric areas of the fuselage suit a fine matte coat and a restrained lightening of the ribs rather than sharp lines. Apply a gloss varnish before the decals and unify the surface with a matte varnish once they have dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
