A pyramidal roof for a church tower for a 1:35 setting. It is the part of the building that decides the outline of the whole tableau: a slender point draws the composition upward and gives the viewer a landmark to which everything else relates. It is set onto a finished tower body, so it does not stand on its own.
A tall pyramidal spire belongs to the parish churches of northern and central Europe, to the city churches of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and to the village churches of Bohemia and Poland alike. In a combat setting it has a practical sense as well: a tower with a view like that served as an artillery observation post, and so it was fired at. A rewarding subject is therefore the version with a shot-through roof and exposed roof truss framing.
Level the mating surface on the board and glue the tower so that the point aims straight up, or the deviation will show at first glance. You can pick out slate or sheet-metal roofing by carrying a lighter gray dry over a dark base in the direction of the courses and in places drawing a weak bluish or rusty filter over the individual panels. At the top belongs a cross or a weathervane, at the bottom copper sheet metal with a greenish patina. Bird droppings under the edge of the cornices are a small thing that brings a tower alive more than any further paint.
