A model placed on a bare board always looks a little unfinished. A diorama base gives it a setting: it establishes where the scene takes place, and the viewer works the rest of the story out. This one is pitched toward the setting of Iraq and Afghanistan, that is a dry, dusty and baking landscape with beaten earth.
The contents are the ground of a scene in 1:35 scale, which is the most widespread scale for ground hardware and figures. The base is supplied unpainted and is ready for the modeler to lay out a vehicle, figures and small equipment on it according to their own idea.
First wash the surface in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry, then apply a base coat. A sandy setting is well built from a darker base toward lighter layers: the base, a dry brush over it in a lighter shade, and finally pigments to bring out the dust in the recesses and along the edges.
The most important thing is to match the model to the base. The dust on the wheels or the tracks has to match the shade of the ground, otherwise the scene does not hold together. So keep setting the vehicle on the base as you go and alternate the painting of the two parts.
The base suits a modeler who wants to build a scene from modern conflicts and does not want to start by shaping terrain. It saves the work on the ground and leaves room for the more interesting part, that is for the hardware and the figures. Vehicles, figures, paints and pigments are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
