The figure captures a bomb disposal specialist of the Czech Police at work with a handling pole. It belongs in scenes where response vehicles, an armored car or an ordinary civilian vehicle stand side by side. It is the human figure that gives such a scene its scale and suggests an action that the machine alone never conveys.
The bomb disposal service is called out to finds of old ammunition, to abandoned luggage and to suspicions of an improvised explosive device. The handling pole makes it possible to lift an object carefully or turn it slightly from a distance and to inspect its surroundings before a technician in a heavy protective suit comes up to it. It is work that tends to be little seen in public, although it takes place in ordinary streets and at railway stations too.
It is a good idea to unify the figure first with a light primer, on which small irregularities of the surface will show. Set the uniform going from a middle darkness: brighten the tops of the folds and darken the hollows with a thin wash instead. The face gains its expression when the eye sockets and the shadow under the chin stay darker than the forehead and the cheekbones. The reflective stripes stand out most when you lay them on with a saturated color over a white base.
