Aoshima 1:700 USS North Carolina BB-55 (1944) — a plastic kit of the American fast battleship in her state at the close of the war in the Pacific.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. The model depicts the American battleship USS North Carolina in her state of 1944, that is, in the late wartime form with added radar equipment and with strengthened anti-aircraft armament. In this scale the ship comes out as a compact display case model that fits in well among other vessels of the same size.
USS North Carolina was the lead ship of the class of the same name and the first American battleship built after the end of the interwar treaty limitations. She entered service in 1941 and represented a new type of the so-called fast battleship: the main armament consisted of nine 406 mm guns in triple turrets, completed by 127 mm dual-purpose guns, and her high speed allowed her to escort carrier task forces. During the war in the Pacific she served precisely in this role — as an escort for the fast task forces and as a floating anti-aircraft barrier, taking part in practically all the main operations. In the course of the conflict she was torpedoed as well, but she survived the damage. Today she is preserved as a museum ship in the state of North Carolina.
With 1:700 ships it pays to assemble and paint the hull and the decks before you begin to glue on the small superstructures and the armament — otherwise you will not get to them with a brush or with an airbrush. Fit the anti-aircraft tubs and the masts only at the very end. The thin elements, that is, the railings, the ladders and the antennas, look oversized in plastic; replace them with photo-etched parts or with taut thin filament. Suggest the deck wood with paint and a filter or with a self-adhesive wooden deck. Apply the paint in thin layers so that the relief is not lost, and refine the finished model with a fine wash in the recesses and discreet vertical streaking on the sides of the hull.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
