About product

Barrel for the 7.5 cm Pak 40, late version, 1:35 (Voyager Model)

A metal barrel machined on a lathe, meant as a replacement for the plastic part in a kit of the anti-tank gun or of a self-propelled vehicle with this weapon. It matches the later production fit, which differs from the earlier one in details of the barrel and the muzzle brake.

How to choose the right version

On the 7.5 cm Pak 40 gun several assemblies were simplified and modified over the course of wartime production, the barrel among them. Before you glue the part on, compare it with a picture of the particular vehicle or artillery position you are building. If you are building after a particular photograph, the shape of the muzzle brake and the transition of the jacket decide it; for a general build you choose according to the period you are setting the scene in.

What metal brings

The barrel is on axis, with no seam and with a drilled muzzle. That can hardly be achieved on a long thin part made of plastic, because sanding the seam rounds off the tapering transition. Metal is additionally durable: it does not deform while the model is being carried and does not crack when something knocks into it in a transport box.

Fitting, polishing and weathering

After machining there tends to be a thin film of oil on the surface. So wash the part in warm water with detergent and let it dry properly. Fine traces left by the tool can be evened out with a very fine abrasive sponge, but do not overdo it, so that the parting edges do not disappear. Glue with cyanoacrylate; a primer for metal is obligatory. The finished barrel can be brought out at the end with graphite or dark pigment at the muzzle.

Who the barrel is for

  • Builders of German artillery and tank destroyers in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers building after particular photographs of the period
  • Anyone who wants to avoid sanding a long plastic barrel

This is a replacement part for a kit you have already bought. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The execution of the barrel and the muzzle brake on the vehicle or gun you are building decides it. If you are building after a particular photograph, compare the shape of the brake.

Yes. A film of oil stays on the surface after machining. Wash it in warm water with detergent, dry it and only then lay on a primer for metal.

It is not. This is a separate part, which is bought for a kit already obtained and replaces the plastic barrel in it.

No. Cement for plastic will not join metal; use cyanoacrylate in a small dose.
