An add-on set of photo-etched parts for the side skirts, in German Schürzen, for a kit of the German Tiger II heavy tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank and not a finished model: it is an accessory meant for the Dragon kit, which the modeler obtains separately.
The side skirts are thin plates hung at a distance from the sides of the vehicle. Their purpose is standoff protection, and that is why they were structurally as thin as possible, which is exactly the property injection-molded plastic cannot manage. A plastic part has to be several times thicker because of the mold, which is immediately apparent when the edge is seen from below or above. Photo-etched metal holds the real proportion and can also be formed: bent, turned or left out entirely, without cracking.
Flatness and precise hanging decide it. Check the plates on glass before working and flatten any ripple by running a smooth roller over them. Glue the carrying features first, let them cure and only then hang the individual plates, otherwise the whole row will sag into a curve. Dispense cyanoacrylate with a pin in minute drops; excess shines on metal and shows through the paint. Degrease the metal with alcohol and use a thin primer. When painting, leave the edge of a plate a shade lighter, to emphasize its thinness, and suggest wear with a light rub of a metallic shade along the leading faces.
