About product

German submarine U-107, Type IXB (Turm I) 1:350 (Mirage Hobby)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:350 scale capturing the German ocean-going submarine U-107 of Type IXB in the form with the original conning tower. The hull is split horizontally and is built as a full hull, so the model does not show only the part above water. Included are molded deck details, periscopes, a 10.5 cm deck gun, lighter anti-aircraft armament, decals and a stand for display. The finished model reaches a length of roughly 22 cm.

The real subject

Type IXB was among the German long-range submarines intended for operations far from their bases, that is in the Atlantic and off the African coast. Compared with the more widespread Type VII it had a greater fuel supply and range, a longer hull and more spacious internal arrangements, for which it paid with less agility and a longer time to dive. U-107 was one of the boats of this series and completed a number of long war patrols; one of them is given in the literature as the patrol with the highest tonnage sunk in the whole war. The designation Turm I refers to the first form of the conning tower, that is the state before the later rebuilds, which added platforms with anti-aircraft armament.

Building and painting tips

With a full hull, pay attention to joining the two halves and cleaning up the seam at the keel and on the deck, because that is where it shows most on a finished model. Fit the small parts, such as the periscopes and the sighting column, only after the hull has been sprayed. The classic scheme consists of a dark gray upper part and a lighter or red lower part, depending on whether you show the model under way or in dock. Submarines had a markedly worn surface, so a highlighting wash in the free-flood holes, fine mottling of patches and a hint of rust at the deck transitions are worthwhile. The model goes well with photo-etched railings and lines made of thin thread.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of naval subjects in a uniform 1:350 scale
  • Modelers interested in the history of the submarine war in the Atlantic
  • Builders who want a smaller display model with a full hull and a stand
  • Those who like to supplement models with photo-etched parts and rigging

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The hull is full, split horizontally, and a stand for display is in the package.

It is the first form of the conning tower, that is the shape before the later rebuilds with platforms for anti-aircraft armament.

In 1:350 scale it measures roughly 22 cm, so it is a compact display model.

It was larger and had a markedly longer range, so it was intended for operations far from base, but it was less agile.
