A veneer accessory for a plastic model of the Italian battleship RN Littorio in the state of 1941, in 1:350 scale. It is not a kit; the package holds a thin wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck, with printed plank laying and a self-adhesive layer on the back. It is glued over the plastic deck and replaces its engraved imitation of wood with the real material.
The veneer can be used straight away, but many modelers want to fine-tune its tone. The rule is that wood absorbs quickly and irreversibly: what you darken once cannot be lightened again. Thin the stain, therefore, and apply it in several light coats, letting the area dry between them and judging the shade in daylight. Always test on an offcut from the same sheet first, not on the deck itself.
Varnish serves two purposes: it evens out the sheen and protects the wood from grease on the fingers during further handling. Choose a matte or semi-matte one, in two or three very light coats; one heavy coat would fill the seams between the planks and the pre-printed pattern would disappear. If you plan a patina as well, apply it before the varnish, so that the varnish seals the result. An airbrush manages an even coat better than a brush, which leaves strokes on wood.
