A combined package of deck accessories for a model of the Russian battleship Gangut of the First World War period. According to the name the set holds a self-adhesive veneer deck with the planking printed on it, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. Everything is cut for the particular kit named with this product, and on another version of the model the shapes will not fit. The set is intended for the Revell 05137 kit.
An engraved deck from a kit has the pattern of the planks sunk into one smooth surface and seen from the side it disappears. Veneer has a grain of its own, which reflects light differently in each plank, so even after varnishing the deck stays alive and does not look like a printed pattern. That is the main reason why this type of accessory has caught on so well with ship models.
You can leave the veneer in its original shade, or even it out with a weak stain; always apply it to an offcut first, because wood soaks it up more than one expects. A thin coat of matte clear follows, which seals the surface and protects it from grease from the fingers. Only on a sealed surface does the weathering go: a thin dark wash flowed into the gaps between the planks gives the deck depth, but it must not spread across the surface. Wipe the excess away with an almost dry cloth in the direction of the planks.
This is a set of accessories, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
