Deck masking set 1:350 - battleship Missouri BB-63 (Artwox Model)

It is neither a model nor a wooden deck but a masking stencil. It serves for spraying the deck areas of a model of the battleship BB-63 Missouri in 1:350 scale and is cut for the Joy-Yard 35000X kit. Several makers release the same ship in this scale and the masks are not interchangeable between them, so go by the target kit when choosing.

The real subject

Missouri was one of the Iowa class battleships. Her hallmarks are the three triple turrets of the main battery of 406 mm caliber, the long slender hull with a high bow and the extensive wooden deck areas, which make up a large part of the visible surface of a model. The reference to the Second World War configuration in the name points to the appearance of the ship before her later refits, when the composition of the light anti-aircraft armament and the electronics changed markedly.

Usage tips

Apply the mask onto a perfectly degreased and cured finish, otherwise there is a risk that the paint will come away with it. Press the edges down with a wooden stick once it is stuck on and spray thinly, in several light coats; a heavy coat runs under the edge and the line bleeds. Lift the film off before the paint has fully cured and pull it back at a shallow angle rather than straight up. The metal areas of the deck can then be shaded in a darker gray and the whole thing evened out with a thinned wash. On large areas it helps to mask in sections rather than the whole deck at once.
