National insignia and markings masks for the Mitsubishi A7M1 Reppu in 1:48 scale. Instead of a decal, the insignia is sprayed straight into the paint.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks for the national insignia and additional markings, not for the canopy glazing. The insignia is sprayed through the mask straight into the finish, so it has no carrier film, does not silver and cannot wrinkle on a curved surface.
Why spray instead of using a decal
A decal lies on the surface and against the light the glossy edge of its film is visible, most of all on matte camouflage. A sprayed insignia has the same degree of sheen as the rest of the finish and follows exactly the rivets and panel lines beneath it. Varnishing a gloss base and using a softener both fall away.
Procedure
Spray the insignia onto finished, cured camouflage. Press the mask down all the way around, best of all with a blunt stick, and lay the paint on perpendicular to the surface in thin coats, so that it does not creep under the edge. On insignia with a light outline the work goes in two stages: the light coat first, then a second mask and the color of the circle itself. The edge of a sprayed insignia is the first thing anyone will examine, so patience pays off.
The A7M1 Reppu was a prototype Mitsubishi carrier fighter intended as the successor to the A6M type. The machines carried the usual markings of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service of that time.
