Templates for the long glazed cover of the Japanese submarine-borne bomber Seiran in 1:48 scale. Prepared for the Tamiya kit, the sheet carries shapes for the outer and the inner surfaces.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Aichi Seiran is among the most unusual aircraft of the Second World War. For it the Imperial Japanese Navy built the giant I-400 class submarines with a watertight hangar on deck into which the machine folded: the floats came off, the wings turned and folded along the fuselage, and the whole aircraft could be run out onto the catapult in a matter of minutes. The target was to be the Panama Canal. The attack never came, as the war ended first, and a single example survives.
The crew consisted of a pilot and a radio operator with a rear machine gun, so the cover is unusually long and divided into a row of panes above and beside one another. On the model it makes up a prominent part of the upper silhouette and unfinished frames are visible from every angle. That is exactly what a cut film is aimed at, because every frame has a shape of its own and they cannot all be kept the same width by hand.
Wash the glass, dry it and transfer the shapes from the largest to the smallest. You will use the inner parts if you leave the rear section of the cover slid open and the cockpit is visible. Spray thinly and leave time for drying between coats. Take the film off as soon as possible, while the paint is only touch-dry, and the edge will then stay clean.
