About product

B-17G Dinghy in 1:48 scale from CMK

This is not an aircraft model but a supplementary set in cast resin, intended for the kit of the four-engine Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress bomber in 1:48 scale. The package holds an inflatable life raft and the compartment it was stowed in on the aircraft. The castings are fine and ready to be set into the fuselage; the basic kit and glue are not included.

The real subject

The B-17G was the most numerous version of the Flying Fortress. A large part of its combat sorties led over the sea, which is why inflatable survival craft stowed in a compartment in the fuselage behind the upper gun turret were part of the equipment. In an emergency the crew released them from outside as well as from inside, and the raft served to keep them alive until rescue arrived. On a model this is a rewarding detail, because an open compartment breaks up the otherwise smooth surface of the fuselage and gives the build a story.

Building and painting tips

Wash the resin parts first in lukewarm water with dish soap to remove any remaining mold release agent, or the paint will not hold. Cut the casting block off with a saw or a fine cutter rather than breaking it, and sand the surface with respiratory protection. The parts are attached with super glue, ideally a thicker gel type, which gives time to seat them. Apply primer before painting. The raft differs markedly in shade from its surroundings, so it is practical to paint it separately off the model and fit it only at the very end, once the fuselage is finished.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the B-17G in 1:48 scale who want detail beyond the plastic kit.
  • Builders who are comfortable working with resin and super glue.
  • Anyone interested in a faithful depiction of over-water survival equipment.
  • Dioramas on the theme of pre-flight preparation or the return of a damaged machine.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the basic kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a supplementary resin set that is fitted into a B-17G bomber kit in 1:48 scale that has already been bought. The aircraft model itself is not included in the package.

Ordinary plastic cement does not work on resin. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate), preferably a thicker gel type that allows the part to be moved for a moment longer.

Yes. Wash them in lukewarm water with dish soap so that the mold release agent disappears, let them dry properly and apply a primer coat. Without that the paint holds badly on smooth resin.

In a compartment in the fuselage behind the upper gun turret. The set therefore contains both the raft and the compartment itself, so that the place can be shown open.
