This add-on set in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer CMK is intended to refine the exterior of a model of the de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth training biplane. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory that is fitted into a model built from a plastic kit. Resin castings hold sharper edges and a finer surface texture than an injection mold allows, so the fabric covering, the stiffeners and the small fittings come out better on them.
The Tiger Moth came about at the beginning of the 1930s as a training biplane of mixed construction in steel tube, wood and fabric and with an inverted inline engine. It became the basic training type of the Royal Air Force and of the Commonwealth countries and served in huge numbers after the war as well, in flying clubs, towing gliders and in agriculture. Its long service and its many users make the Tiger Moth a rewarding subject on which work on the exterior details pays off.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent residue disappears from the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-bladed saw or a cutting disc; never break them off. It is bonded with cyanoacrylate glue, best of all the thicker gel kind, because resin does not react to ordinary cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting; it evens the resin out with the plastic and reveals sanding marks. Sanding is best done wet and with respiratory protection.
The add-on set is supplied unpainted and without a base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
