The 1:48 Empty cartridge case for 5 cm Pak 38 set is a modeling accessory, not a kit. It contains miniatures of empty, that is spent, cartridge cases from the German 5 cm PaK 38 antitank gun in 1:48 scale. Scattered around the carriage, stacked in a box or thrown about in the bed of a vehicle, they give a scene a story that the model alone does not have.
The 5 cm PaK 38 was a German towed antitank gun of 50 mm caliber with a long barrel, introduced at the beginning of the 1940s as the successor to the 3.7 cm PaK 36. It fired fixed ammunition, so the whole case was ejected in one piece after firing; by a firing position a whole heap of them therefore lay within moments. This detail is so frequent in period photographs that without it a firing position looks unfinished.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel, sand the residue from production back and degrease the surface. The basis is a brass shade, but a spent case is not shiny: add a darker wash at the base and at the mouth, fine dust with a dry pigment and possibly a hint of sooting. In a scene place the cases irregularly, turned at different angles, with some half sunk into grass or mud. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue; on soil a drop of thin PVA glue works well.
The set is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
