The tiger finish of a British Phantom FGR.2 with the serial number XV404 of No. 74 Squadron for the Tiger Meet in 1992, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Royal Air Force had among its units one that took a tiger into its badge as early as the First World War. No. 74 Squadron was therefore among the regular participants in the international meet of tiger units, and for the 1992 edition it had one of its Phantoms painted, the machine with the serial number XV404.
British Phantoms differed from the American ones enough to be given designations of their own. The factory code F-4M corresponds to the service name Phantom FGR.2, that is the machine with British Rolls-Royce Spey engines, a wider fuselage at the power units and different avionics. The abbreviation FGR summed up three roles at once: fighter, ground attack and reconnaissance.
The year 1992 was the last for the British Phantoms. The squadron handed them in shortly after the meet mentioned and its tiger tradition moved elsewhere, so the commemorative finish of that year is a full stop after a long chapter. That is exactly why it is a popular subject among collectors of British equipment.
The tiger stripes cover large areas of the fin and the outer parts of the wing, where the surface is broken up. It is therefore better to divide the artwork and to help yourself with a softener.
