A printed resin engine set in 1:48 scale for a model of the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory that replaces the engine from the plastic mold. Printed resin makes it possible to render even features that cannot be done in injection-molded plastic, such as separate cylinder fins or piping. The set makes most sense where you build the model with the cowling open or partly removed, or with the panels open. Check the part count on the packaging.
The Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat was the carrier fighter version of the Wildcat with folding wings and a six-gun armament, deployed from 1942. It was powered by the twin-row air-cooled Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engine with fourteen cylinders in two rows. It is exactly the twin-row layout that is clearly visible from the front and that sets the F4F apart from the later FM-2 version, which was given a single-row Wright engine. Separate engine sets are therefore made for the individual Wildcat versions.
Printed parts are more brittle than a conventional casting, so separate them from the supports with a fine saw or a sharp scalpel and never snap them off. Wash them in lukewarm water with detergent before gluing. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting. An engine is a rewarding place for building up layers: a dark base, metallic shades on the cylinder heads, a dark wash in the recesses and a dry brush on the edges. Try to finish the engine completely before you seat it in the cowling, because once it is in place you will not reach it with a brush.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
