This is a masking set, not a kit. The set is made for a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-6 model in 1:48 scale and its subject is the checkerboard pattern on the forward fuselage, a detail that comes out considerably better sprayed than applied as a decal. The masks are pre-cut in a self-adhesive carrier and are cut to the shapes of one particular kit, so check before buying that they match the model you are building. The masks are cut for the Eduard kit.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A was a German single-seat fighter with a radial engine, a wide-track landing gear and all-metal construction. The A-6 version belonged to the mature phase of the A family and was one of the most widespread. Striking color patterns on the engine cowling, the checkerboard among them, served for quick recognition of the machines in the air and are a rewarding subject for modelers today, because they bring a single-color model very much to life.
With a checkerboard the order of the colors is crucial: spray the lighter shade over the whole area first, let it cure, and only then apply the mask and spray the darker shade. The surface underneath must be smooth, because a mask does not seal over a grainy finish. Press the edge of the mask down with a toothpick and lay the paint on in several very thin coats, because a thick coat builds a step that shows once the mask comes off. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has set. Before you move on to decals, spray the area with a gloss varnish.
