A set of detail parts for building a miniature of the four-cylinder BMW N46 engine in 1:24 scale, and that in the turbocharged version marked as Yamamoto Spec. The naturally aspirated version of the same engine is a separate item, so when choosing, watch which of the two you are ordering. It is not a car kit: the package holds a power unit to be installed in a model of a car that the builder obtains separately.
The N46 series is a water-cooled four-cylinder gasoline engine from BMW, delivered in production form as a naturally aspirated unit for the lower and middle model ranges. In the modifying scene it belongs among the popular bases precisely because it will take further work, including a turbocharger fitted afterwards; the turbocharged version in this set corresponds to such a modification, not to a production car. The Yamamoto Spec marking refers to the way the maker of the set renders it.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap and cut the casting blocks off with a sharp modeling scalpel. Assemble and paint the engine outside the model, where you can reach it from every side, and seat the finished whole in the engine bay only afterward. Set the block, the head, the sheet metal covers and the forced induction parts apart by shade and by degree of gloss; on the turbocharger and the exhaust headers, heat discoloration of the metal and a fine layer of soot come in useful. Make the lines and the hoses yourself from wire and flexible tubing, as the set usually does not include them. Before the final gluing, always dry-fit to check that the engine with its accessories goes in under the hood.
