Eduard 1:48 FM-1 Wildcat wheel bay PRINT is a 3D-printed resin accessory that replaces the landing gear bays on a model of the FM-1 in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but a detail set.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard deals with one of the places where injection-molded plastic runs into its limits. The space into which the main landing gear retracts is full of beams, rods and hoses on the real aircraft, and making it in one piece in a mold is practically impossible. 3D printing in resin copes with thin sections and undercut shapes, so the finished bay has depth and structure. The accessory is fitted into a plastic FM-1 Wildcat model in 1:48 scale that is under construction.
Among carrier fighters of the Second World War the Wildcat is easy to recognize precisely by its landing gear. The main wheels are set close together and retract by hand into the sides of the fuselage rather than into the wing, as was usual on fighters of the time. The pilot used a hand crank for that, which became the subject of more than one story on the carriers. The FM-1 is the licensed version of the Grumman F4F-4 built by the Eastern Aircraft division of General Motors, and it took over the landing gear arrangement from its predecessor unchanged. Because the wheels stay partly visible even when retracted, this part of the fuselage is among the most closely watched places on a finished model.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry through. Fit the bay before you close the fuselage, otherwise you will reach inside only with difficulty. Always try the fit dry first and take any overhang off with a thin file. Use super glue for the fitting. Painting is easier before the fuselage is closed; a light base, a fine wash into the recesses and a light emphasis of the edges with a dry brush all work well.
