1:48 I-16 Ski landing gear (Non-retractable version) (all kits) from Quinta Studio replaces the wheeled landing gear of the Soviet fighter with a winter ski version that does not retract.
Responsibility details are not available.
Winter operations are among the most rewarding subjects Soviet machines have to offer – a snow-covered airfield, a battered finish and an aircraft standing on skis instead of wheels. This item from Quinta Studio makes exactly that transformation possible. According to the name it is the non-retractable version, and the set is worked out as a universal fit for models of the type in 1:48 scale.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter with a cantilever low-wing layout, a short stubby fuselage and a radial engine. It was among the first production fighters with retractable landing gear, but in winter conditions ski gear that did not stow into the fuselage was routinely fitted. With it the aircraft carried somewhat more drag, but it could operate from snow-covered surfaces with no hard runway.
The decision comes right at the start: with skis the landing gear stays permanently out, so think through the pose of the model and any base in advance. Sand the seating faces of the legs flat and fit the skis so that they sit parallel and the aircraft does not rock. Join the small parts with cyanoacrylate glue and leave the contact with the snow material on the base until the very end, so that the paint does not get clogged.
The fighter itself and the paints to finish it are bought as separate items.
