A kit of the legendary airliner Junkers F 13 in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Mikromir. It is a short-run injection-molded model, with which it is usual that the parts need more cleaning up than with large-series production and that locating pins are missing. The reward is a subject you will not find in big molds.
The F 13 took off shortly after the First World War and wrote itself into history as the first all-metal airliner. The fuselage and the wing were made up of a duralumin structure covered with the characteristic corrugated sheet metal, which carried part of the load and became the recognition mark of the make for decades. The enclosed cabin took several passengers, while the crew at first sat in an open space. The machine was sold all over the world, flew on wheels, skis and floats, and opened up scheduled transport on routes where until then there had been no air link at all.
With a short-run kit, always try the joints out dry first and count on filing the mating surfaces to fit. The corrugated sheet metal is essential to this type: sanding it through a layer of putty is thankless work, so try to run the joints so that the texture is not damaged. Leave the surface rather more matte and build the metallic sheen up with a thin layer, not with heavy metallic paint. The lengthwise corrugations work beautifully with the light, so fine shading of the individual bands will do more for the result than a striking patina.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
