An injection-molded plastic kit of the early Lockheed U-2A high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale from the Taiwanese company AFV Club. This is a new mold with finely engraved panel lines and suggested riveting, with clear parts for the canopy and with a well-worked-out assembly of reconnaissance cameras, which can either be built into the fuselage section behind the cockpit or displayed beside the aircraft on a service cart. The package also includes the shade cover that was fitted over a parked aircraft against overheating on a sun-baked apron. The decals offer markings for American machines including an aircraft in research service, so both the silver and metallic finishes and the light one.
The U-2 is a single-seat high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft with a glider-like wing of enormous span, designed to fly above the reach of the air defenses of its day. The U-2A version was the first production form; it was powered by a Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet and with it the aircraft worked at altitudes of around twenty kilometers. To save weight the landing gear was arranged in tandem on the centerline of the fuselage; on take-off the wing was propped up by jettisonable support carts, and after landing the aircraft rested on a reinforced wingtip. It was the U-2 that flew over the territory of the Soviet Union in the 1950s and became one of the symbols of the Cold War. Flying it was exceptionally demanding, because at operating altitude the aircraft moved in a narrow band between the stall and exceeding the critical Mach number.
The long slender wing needs careful gluing and reinforcement at the root, otherwise it will droop under its own weight. Fill and sand the fuselage joints, then restore the engraved lines with a scriber. Mask the cockpit and the clear parts before spraying. The all-black finish of the later machines is best done in dark gray with black shading of the panels, so that the model does not look like a silhouette; a natural metal finish, on the other hand, needs a perfectly smooth gloss black base, onto which the metallic paint goes only afterwards, and that must then no longer be masked with ordinary tape. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and finish with a matte coat of varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
