Armycast 1:48 Luftwaffe Balkenkreuze, early version — part I is a set of die-cut self-adhesive masking templates for spraying the early form of the national insignia of Luftwaffe aircraft. These are neither decals nor a kit.

A masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. The self-adhesive sheets hold machine-cut shapes of the national insignia of the Luftwaffe, the so-called Balkenkreuz, in the early form used at the beginning of the Second World War period. The set is the first part of a larger whole, which the maker split into separately sold parts.
The Balkenkreuz is the national insignia that was placed on Luftwaffe aircraft on the sides of the fuselage and on the upper and lower wing surfaces. The early forms have a solid black cross with a broad white border all the way round; in later periods the border was progressively narrowed and the rendering simplified. For modelers the division into early, middle and late versions is therefore practical — the period-correct shape of the insignia is one of the main clues to placing a model in time.
The masks go on a finished, dry and degreased coat of paint. With a multicolor rendering the insignia is sprayed in layers: the light area is sprayed first, then the further pieces of the template are added and the dark center is oversprayed. Press the edges of the mask down carefully with a wooden stick, spray several very thin coats at right angles to the surface and let them dry in between. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried by pulling back over itself at a sharp angle. A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it does not silver, it follows rivets and engraved lines and it can be weathered just like the surrounding finish.
The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.
