A set of self-adhesive masks in 1:48 scale for spraying the Japanese national insignia onto a model of the Mitsubishi A6M2a/b fighter. It is an accessory, not a kit: you stick the mask onto the model, spray the marking in paint and take the mask off. This version is cut for markings without a white outline, that is for the red disc alone. Applying it is therefore one step simpler than with the outlined version - one color and one masking will do.
The Mitsubishi A6M Reisen served as a carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The early A6M2 versions were marked by a radial engine, a light structure and great range; the designations A6M2a and A6M2b are used for two early production forms differing in, among other things, the treatment of the wingtips. The form of the national insignia changed over time. On machines in the early light finish the hinomaru was commonly applied without a surround, so it is this unoutlined version that matches the earlier period of service.
The base has to be smooth, degreased and fully cured, otherwise the paint will run under the edge of the mask. Red is semi-transparent - over darker camouflage, therefore, spray a thin coat of white or a light base first and only then the red over it. Lay the paint on in several very thin coats and spray at right angles, not at an angle across the line. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; if you leave it under a hard finish, the edge risks tearing away. When you are done, even the sheen out by going over the whole model with clear. On broken-up places press the mask down with a wooden toothpick, as metal or a fingernail can damage the finish.
The package holds only the masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
