Masks for the glazing of the Westland Sea King anti-submarine and rescue helicopter in the HAS.1, HAS.5 and HU.5 versions. Die-cut for the parts of the Airfix kit in 1:48 scale, single-sided variant.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British built the machine under license from an American design, but fitted it with their own Gnome turbines and British electronics. The HAS.1 version entered the Fleet Air Arm at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s and its task was to hunt submarines: it lowered a dipping sonar on a cable into the water, hung over the surface for hours and listened. A boat-shaped hull and folding rotor blades let it operate from decks where an ordinary helicopter would not manage.
The later HAS.5 received a more powerful search radar and more sensitive acoustic equipment, so it could search a substantially larger area of sea. The HU.5 designation belonged to aircraft rebuilt for transport and above all for search and rescue. It was in this role that the Sea King won its greatest fame, because it pulled castaways out of the stormy sea around the British shores for decades.
A model of a large helicopter in 1:48 scale has a great deal of glazing indeed, from the front panels of the pilot's compartment to the row of small windows in the side of the cabin. Tracing that many frames by hand is tedious work and a single tremor of the hand is enough for the result to show. The die-cut shapes derive from the parts of the Airfix kit and are laid directly onto the clear parts.
This item is single-sided, so spraying from the outside is assumed. The film can be bent over a slightly convex panel without trouble, without lifting at the corners. The shades and the plastic kit are sold separately.
