Black Dog 1:48 deep wading trunks for the Sherman

A set of four resin parts in 1:48 scale that represents the tall trunks for deep wading which Sherman tanks were given before landing from landing craft. It is not a vehicle model but a conspicuous accessory for the rear of the Hobby Boss 84803 kit.

What the trunks did on the vehicle

The intake and exhaust shafts carried the air supply and the exhaust gases above the water line, so the engine could run even when the water rose above the hull. Sealing of the joints and hatches went with them. Once the beach was reached, the trunks were jettisoned or torn off, which is why period photographs show them for only a brief moment, and that is exactly what makes them a striking and unusual subject.

Building it and setting it in a scene

The trunks are tall and slender, so fit them only after the rear has been painted and leave the joint to cure undisturbed. The sheet metal of the trunks was usually painted in haste and rust appeared on it quickly, so do not be afraid of coarser traces of corrosion and of streaks left by running water. If you are building a beach scene, a wet sheen on the lower hull and damp sand in the running gear work well. The height of the trunks also changes the composition of the whole scene, so decide in advance how much clear space above the model you will leave on the base.
