A resin detail set in 1:48 scale aimed at the wing armament of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX fighter. It replaces the plastic rendering of the barrels, the covers and the ports in the leading edge with finer castings. The set does not contain a model of the aircraft.
The wing of the Spitfire was built during production in several variants that differ from one another precisely in the layout of the armament: in the number and placement of the barrels, in the shape of the covers over the weapons and in the ports in the leading edge. That means two things. First, the armament is a distinguishing feature that on a model determines whether it matches a particular subject. Second, these are elements on the leading edge, the place everyone looks at who picks the model up. The exact contents of the package are stated on the box.
The thin barrels and tubular parts are the most fragile part of the whole set. Cut them off the casting block with a saw only at the very end of the build, never at the beginning, as until then the block protects them. Widen the holes for fitting in the wing with a drill turned in your fingers rather than in a power drill: both resin and thin plastic tear at high speed. It is practical to paint them while still on the casting block, which serves as a handle. Create the metallic look of the barrels with a dark base and a light burnish with graphite or a metallic pigment; glossy silver looks unnatural in this scale.
A detail set is an accessory for a kit, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
