This set from the Czech maker Eduard is not a kit of an aircraft but a replacement part for 1:48 scale. The main landing gear legs are cast in bronze, a metal markedly stronger than plastic or resin that does not sag over time. That solves the typical problem of larger and heavier models, whose landing gear splays outward after a few months in a display case.
The metal casting captures the shape and the breakdown of the legs including the detail of the struts and rivets, which a plastic part usually carries only as a suggestion. The surface is smooth and ready for painting, and the weight of the part also gives the model a welcome stability. The set is intended as a direct replacement for the original parts, but on a particular model it is advisable to try the fit dry first.
The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was a British fighter of the end of the Second World War with the Napier Sabre piston engine, heavy armament and a high speed at low altitude. It was used, among other roles, for strikes against ground targets and for chasing V-1 flying bombs. The robust main landing gear with its long legs is one of its characteristic features, and that is exactly why its strength shows on a model.
Cut the parts off and clean them up with a fine file; metal will take a sharper tool than resin. Degrease the surface before painting and lay on a primer suitable for metal, otherwise the paint holds badly on smooth bronze. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on a joint under load a two-part epoxy pays off. Once painted, bring the landing gear to life with a dark wash in the recesses and a light dry brush in a lighter color along the edges, and add dust pigment at the contact area if you like.
This is an addition for building a model, not a kit in its own right. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
