The BASIC entry level of kabuki masks for the F-4B Phantom II carrier fighter in 1:72 scale. Die-cut shapes for the small cockpit frames.
Responsibility details are not available.
The B version was the first production rendition of McDonnell's machine for the US Navy and the Marine Corps. It carried J79 engines with a thrust no carrier aircraft had had before, a radar in a bulky nose and eight hardpoints for guided missiles. A cannon was missing, because the doctrine of the early 1960s did not allow for a classic air combat. Over Vietnam it turned out that this was a mistake, and the Phantoms began to learn to get around it with gun pods.
In 1:72 scale the whole canopy is barely two centimeters long and the frame between the front and the rear section is the width of a hair. Cutting tape by hand at such a size stops being a craft and becomes a lottery, because a scalpel has nowhere to run and the strip tears during removal. Pre-cut shapes are an advantage here that is even greater than in the larger scales.
BASIC is the lowest of the levels the brand offers.
Use tweezers with a straight tip and lift the masks out of the sheet with the point of a scalpel, not with your fingers. Work over a light surface from which a dropped piece can be found. Finish pressing down with a blunt toothpick around the perimeter of a frame, so that the paper follows even a bulged center.
It pays to switch on a stronger lamp and go over the outline of every frame with a magnifier. In 1:72 scale a lifted edge a few hundredths of a millimeter wide is enough and the paint will run under it along its whole length, which can no longer be repaired without taking the part apart.
