The fourth part of the 1:72 decal series devoted to the fighter pilots deployed in the Pacific theater.
Responsibility details are not available.
The war in the Pacific had its own rules for fighter pilots. The distances between islands ran into hundreds of kilometers over open sea, navigation came down to a compass and a watch, and a forced landing usually meant the end. On top of that came damp and heat, which destroyed engines, coverings and armament faster than anyone had allowed for, and the ground crews had to improvise on beaches and on strips hastily leveled in the jungle. Spare parts ran out and a good deal was made on the spot.
The aircraft that came through this environment differed from the European ones at first sight. Finishes bleached by sun and salt, repair patches in different shades, personal artwork on the noses and bold unit markings that served for quick recognition in the confusion of combat. More than one airframe carried layers of paint from three different periods at once. That variety is exactly why Pacific subjects keep coming back in one part of the series after another: there is so much material that it does not fit on a single sheet. The fourth installment follows on from the earlier sheets and brings a further set of aircraft with stories of their own.
1:72 scale forgives little and small lettering shifts easily at that reduction. Have smooth-jawed tweezers and a soft brush ready, dip the decal only briefly in lukewarm water and let it slide off the paper once it is already on the model. Wipe away the remaining adhesive with a damp cloth after it dries, otherwise it will show as a stain under the matte varnish.
