VMS No-Peel Primer RED OXIDE No.5 — red-brown oxide primer

This primer from VMS, from the No-Peel range, is an acrylic, water-thinnable product for preparing the surface of a model before painting. The name no-peel refers to the main strength of the range: the film bonds firmly to the surface and does not peel even when masking tape is lifted. Its adhesion comes close to solvent-based primers, but without their smell and aggressiveness. It holds on plastic, resin, 3D printed parts and metal.

The RED OXIDE No.5 shade is red-brown, matching the classic oxide (rust) primer used in industry as an anticorrosion coat. In modeling it has two uses. As an undercoat beneath red-brown, rusty and brown shades it raises their saturation and saves coats. At the same time it works as a paint in its own right — as an imitation of the factory oxide coat on chassis and the undersides of bodies, as the lower layer for the chipping technique, where rust appears under the flaked paint, or as the base for building rusty surfaces on wrecks and neglected vehicles.

Use

• The product comes thinned by the manufacturer to a viscosity suitable for spraying with an airbrush straight away — no thinning is needed. The manufacturer states the airbrush as the recommended technique.
• Recommended airbrush nozzles are 0.2–0.4 mm, the working pressure roughly 20–40 PSI.
• Spray in thin coats. The fine binder gives a thin film that does not clog rivets, welds or surface texture.
• As a base for chipping: spray the oxide layer, let it cure and only then apply the final color, which you then reveal locally.
• It can also be used as a direct color for chassis, the undersides of bodies and rusty surfaces.
• The airbrush and the tools are cleaned with plain water.

Who it is for

For builders of military vehicles, cars and civilian machinery who work with rust, chipping and red-brown shades. Modelers of figures and of resin or 3D printed kits who need a warm, well-adhering base that stands up to masking will appreciate it too.

Safety: the product is water-based and contains no aggressive solvents, but even so work in a well-ventilated room, use a respirator when spraying with an airbrush and protect your eyes. It must not freeze — store and use it at room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children.
