A combined package of accessories for the plastic kit of the battleship Scharnhorst as she was in 1943, in 1:700 scale. According to the name it holds a veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. The set does not take the place of the kit; it completes it, and it is cut for the Flyhawk FH1148 kit.
With veneer, the most work is made not by the flat area but by everything around it. The bases of superstructures, the barbettes of the turrets, winches, hatchways and hatches divide the deck into dozens of smaller fields, and that is where it shows whether the veneer was laid carefully. The cut-outs are pre-cut, true enough, but the tolerances are tight and plastic parts from different production runs differ slightly.
Work field by field, not over the whole deck at once: peel the film off only under the stretch you are gluing. At the superstructures, try the veneer dry first, and where it overhangs, trim it with a fresh blade on a glass or cutting mat, not on the model. Once it is glued, it is worth bringing out the seams between the planks with a very thin dark paint applied on the tip of a brush; it runs into the pattern by capillary action and the deck gains depth. Wipe the excess off before it dries.
The set is not a model on its own. The plastic kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
