About product

HMS Hood 1931 1:700 — an Artwox Model wooden deck

A pre-cut sheet of natural veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back, cut for the deck areas of a ship model in 1:700 scale. Once glued on it replaces the plastic relief with real wood with its own pattern of growth rings, which on large unbroken areas is visible at first glance. The year in the name refers to the configuration of the real ship: her form changed during her service, so the decks of the individual versions differ.

The real subject

HMS Hood was a British battlecruiser of the Admiral class, completed in 1920. For a long time she was the longest warship of the Royal Navy, with an elongated hull and extensive wood-covered decks that are characteristic of her appearance. In the 1930s she served mainly in the Mediterranean and in home waters and was a frequent guest on overseas cruises. She was lost in 1941 in an action in the Denmark Strait.

Application tips

With a deck this long the riskiest moment is the laying itself. Never remove the whole backing film at once: fold it back over only a few centimeters at one end of the part, settle the part precisely and only then pull the film away gradually while pressing the veneer down. Work with tweezers and a wooden stick, as fingers transfer grease. Pierce any bubble that forms with the finest needle and smooth it over; pulling the whole part back does not pay off. Sharp inner corners by the superstructures are better cut through with a new blade directly on the model than bent in the veneer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British capital ships in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who are bothered by a sprayed deck reading flat
  • Anyone interested in a display model with an emphasis on surfaces
  • Those who want wood without tapping out individual planks by hand

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The ship went through modifications during her service and the layout of the deck areas changed with them. The year says which form of the real ship the set is cut for, so that the parts sit on the right version of the model.

In sections. Uncover only a short stretch at one end, settle the part and pull the film away gradually as you press the veneer down. Removing the whole film at once leads to sticking it on crooked and to cracks on long parts.

Yes, if it is well stuck down and sealed with varnish. It is recommended to spray the hull and the superstructures first and to glue the deck on only afterwards, so that needless coats of paint do not go over it.
