About product

Kirishima 1941 veneer deck, 1:700 scale, Artwox Model

This item is not a model of the ship but an accessory to a plastic kit. A wooden veneer with the printed laying of the deck planks and with a self-adhesive back is cut to the shape of the decks of the Fujimi 420219 kit. On a model it creates a surface with grain of its own that cannot be imitated with paint.

The real subject

The Kirishima belonged to the Kongo class, originally built as battlecruisers in the years before the First World War. In the 1930s she went through two fundamental rebuilds, after which she was classified as a fast battleship: she received new boilers and turbines, a lengthened hull and strengthened armor protection. The main armament consisted of eight 356 mm guns in four twin turrets. Her high speed predestined her to escort carrier formations; she was lost in November 1942 off Guadalcanal. The 1941 state matches the configuration after the second rebuild.

Gluing and weathering tips

The printed pattern of the planks is only a starting point. What adds the most realism is work on the gaps: let a very thinned dark wash run along the grooves between the planks and draw the excess off with a cloth in the direction of the laying, never across it. The gluing procedure is standard: sanded and degreased plastic, a dry test, the film in sections, laying from the axis toward the sides. On the long deck of the rebuilt hull the veneer likes to go a few tenths off, so mark the axis lightly on the plastic with a pencil in advance. A final matte varnish protects the wood as well as the printing.

Who the deck is for

  • Builders of Japanese fast battleships in 1:700 scale.
  • Modelers who want to deal with a deck in wood instead of painting planks with a brush.
  • Those who enjoy fine-tuning weathering and work on the gaps.
  • Anyone interested in a higher level of detail without having to take on photo-etch.

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

With a very thinned dark wash that is let run into the grooves. Draw the excess off with a cloth along the planks, not across them, or the pattern will smear.

As a rule yes. It lays on a clear deck far more easily, and the superstructures are then glued onto the veneer or into a cut-out opening.

No. The outlines are cut for the Fujimi 420219 kit; another kit has a different layout of the superstructures and the deck will not line up.
