The second numbered item of the 1:700 scale harbor range. It is aimed at modelers for whom one stretch of shore is no longer enough and who want to extend their harbor or give it a different character. In a display case it soon becomes apparent that a short piece of quay looks inadequate beside a long hull and the scene breaks in half.
The edge is the key. Before you glue anything, hold the two parts together and find the position in which the surfaces run on most smoothly. A small unevenness where they meet can then simply be filled and sanded, so that the seam disappears under the paint. If a difference in height cannot be leveled out, turn it to your advantage and make a step or a ramp of it – harbors seldom form a perfect plane.
Concrete surfaces are never one color, and that is exactly what makes the result believable. Keep the base in a neutral light gray, then shade the individual stretches slightly toward warmer and cooler tones, to give the impression of repairs from different years. Bring out the joints with a thin dark line run along the engraved dividing marks. Suggest oil stains by stippling and above all sparingly; dirt over the whole area would knock the scale down.
The base and any further stretches are added by the modeler according to the plan of the scene.
