About product

AGO C.IV, late version, 1:72 (Kovozavody Prostejov)

This kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Kovozavody Prostejov covers the German AGO C.IV reconnaissance biplane in its late production form. It is a stand-alone model of the aircraft meant to be glued together and painted. Check the contents of the package and the number of color schemes on the packaging.

A machine with a hand of its own

A collection of First World War aircraft stands or falls by the variety of its silhouettes. With its tapering wings the AGO C.IV is a type that cannot be mistaken for anything else in a display case, and yet few people reach for it.

The real subject

The AGO C.IV was a German two-seat reconnaissance and observation biplane of the second half of the First World War. It was built by AGO Flugzeugwerke, and its identifying mark was its markedly tapered wings, narrowing toward the tips, such as you will not find elsewhere in that period. It was powered by a water-cooled inline engine. The crew consisted of a pilot and an observer in a rear open cockpit. The task of these machines was aerial reconnaissance and the direction of artillery fire, that is the work on which a command's grasp of the situation at the front rested.

Building and painting tips

The key place in building a biplane is the upper wing and its dihedral. Glue the interplane struts and let them cure thoroughly while the model is still held in the build, and only then set about the rigging. Have the fuselage and the lower wing painted by that point, because later a brush will not reach them.

Fabric surfaces of that period look best when you lighten the base tone slightly in the middle of the bays between the ribs and darken it along the ribs, which makes the structure of the frame under the fabric appear naturally. Lay on gloss varnish before the decals, settle the decals with a softener and seal the whole model with matte or satin varnish, depending on how fresh a machine you want to show.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in the aviation of the First World War
  • Builders of biplanes in 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of unusual and less frequently built types
  • More advanced beginners who want to try rigging

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

That other boxing is aimed at the camouflaged coloring of the machine. Check the differences in the contents of the two packages on the packaging.

The letter C was the German wartime classification of two-seat armed aircraft, and the Roman numeral gives the order of the type within the maker.

A biplane with rigging is a step more demanding than a simple monoplane, but with calm work even a more experienced beginner will manage it.

Most often from stretched sprue or from elastic thread, which is tensioned and fixed with super glue.
