An accessory of the Metallic Details brand which on a model of the B-1B strategic bomber in 1:72 scale replaces the plastic air intakes to the engines. The aim is the correct shape of the leading frame and above all the depth of the duct: on an injection-molded kit the intake tends to be no more than a shallow blind hole, into which the wall of the nacelle is visible when looking from the front. The product is not a kit; the model is obtained separately.
The B-1B Lancer is an American strategic bomber with a variable-geometry wing and four engines housed in pairs in nacelles under the center section. Against the older version designed for high speeds, the B variant was given revised intakes with a curved duct, so as to reduce radar reflection from the rotating parts of the engine. The shape of the intake is therefore not a merely cosmetic matter on a model but a recognition feature of the particular version — and when looking from the front it is the first thing a viewer notices.
This accessory is fitted early, not at the end of the build. Still before the nacelles are closed, try out dry how much plastic has to be taken off, so that the part sits on the axis and does not stand out of the outline. Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap beforehand and let it dry. Paint the inside of the duct before you close it — once glued together you will not reach inside with a brush. The intakes tend to be light inside, so white or a very light gray with fine dirt at the edge proves itself. Fill the joint between the accessory and the plastic and sand it smooth, or a visible gap will be left at the leading edge; sand wet and with respiratory protection. Glue with superglue and let the finished assembly cure with no stress.
The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not hold. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
