An injection-molded plastic kit of the light British de Havilland DH.60 Moth family biplane in 1:72 scale from Avis, in the version with floats. It is a small model with simple shapes, on which the result depends more on careful work with the struts and a clean finish than on the number of parts. The real subject is one of the classics of interwar civil flying and goes well in a display case alongside larger types.
The DH.60 Moth was a light two-seat biplane of the mid-1920s that made private and club flying dramatically cheaper and more accessible. It had a mixed structure with fabric covering, two open cockpits in tandem and folding wings, thanks to which it could be stored in a small hangar or towed behind a car. The type was built in a number of versions differing mainly in the engine, the equipment and details of the landing gear, and was used for training, for travel and for sport flying. Machines fitted with floats served for training and for operating from stretches of water where no airfield was available.
With small biplanes it is patience in gluing the interplane struts that counts. It pays to try the assembly dry first and to glue it in stages, so that the upper wing sits parallel and the model does not stand askew. The bracing wires are well imitated with thin stretched plastic or elastic thread, and it is worth suggesting them even in a small scale, because without them the model looks empty. Fabric surfaces take matte paint and only a subtle accent on the ribs; an overdone wash is distracting on them. The floats and their struts are more practical to paint separately and attach at the end, otherwise it is hard to reach the underside of the fuselage. With shorter production runs of tooling, expect to remove flash and to work on the joints, and a dry check will save a lot of work.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
