A piece of aviation history outside the mainstream
Interwar reconnaissance machines are a subject hardly ever seen in display cases. The Hungarian version also brings coloring you would not expect on a German type, so the model stands out even beside the usual camouflaged machines.
The Heinkel He 46 was a two-seat aircraft for close reconnaissance and cooperation with ground troops, from the early 1930s. It is characterized by a high wing carried on struts above the fuselage, which left the crew a view downwards, that is exactly where one looks on a reconnaissance sortie. Propulsion came from a radial engine. The crew consisted of a pilot and an observer in a separate open cockpit.
The E-2Un version was produced for Hungarian service and is a typical example of how interwar German designs found their way to other operators. Machines of this type carried out close reconnaissance and artillery observation, and as the 1930s went on they were replaced in front-line units by more modern types.
The wing struts deserve the main attention. Glue them only after the fuselage and the undersides are painted, and make sure the wing sits symmetrically, because on a high-wing machine every tilt shows at once. It helps to try the fit dry first and to prepare a simple prop that holds the wing while the glue sets.
Fabric surfaces come off well if you lighten the base color slightly in the bays between the ribs. Lay on gloss varnish before the decals, settle the decals with a softener and finally choose the level of sheen of the varnish according to how worn a machine you want to show. Interwar and early wartime machines tended to be well kept, so do not overdo the weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
