Plastic kit of the Merkava main battle tank in the Mk.III version in 1:72 scale. The smaller scale means a sensible size for the finished model and a shorter build, so it works well when you want to collect armor in larger numbers and do not have much display-case space.
The Merkava is an Israeli main battle tank whose most striking design feature is the powerpack placed in the front of the hull. The engine up front adds another mass between the crew and the frontal arc and at the same time frees the rear for a door into the vehicle. Compared with earlier versions, the Mk.III brought a 120 mm smoothbore gun, a more powerful powerpack and a modular approach to the armor that allows damaged or obsolete sections to be replaced without touching the hull. Another characteristic external feature of the Merkava family are the chains with weights hanging under the rear of the turret.
With armor it pays to finish the running gear before you close the hull for good, otherwise the road wheels and tracks become hard to reach later. Cut the parts off one by one with clippers and clean up the sprue gate remnants; tweezers help with the small parts in this scale. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, which wicks into the seam by capillary action. Apply a primer before painting, as it evens out the surface and shows up any gaps. Spray the base color with an airbrush, put down a gloss varnish compatible with the paint you used under the decals and knock the surface back to matte once the decals have dried. Build the weathering up gradually: a wash brings out the cast detail and the rivets, and pigments on the lower hull and the tracks add dust and mud.
