This kit is a combination of two subjects in one package: the Soviet twin-engined Pe-2R reconnaissance aircraft and the BZ-38 airfield tanker truck, which refueled aircraft during the Second World War. The scale is 1:72 and the maker is the Ukrainian brand UM. The combination of an aircraft and its ground crew is an ideal basis for an airfield diorama, because the two models together form a complete scene — the aircraft on the apron and the truck refueling it.
The Petlyakov Pe-2 was one of the most important Soviet twin-engined bombers of the Second World War. It was marked by a slender airframe, a pair of liquid-cooled engines and, for its day, a high speed. The Pe-2R version was a reconnaissance conversion intended for photographic reconnaissance, in which the bomb load gave way to cameras and a larger quantity of fuel for long flights over enemy territory. The BZ-38 tanker truck was the basic airfield refueling vehicle of the Soviet Air Force. It was built on the three-axle GAZ-AAA chassis, had a tank with a capacity of 1350 liters, space for the refueling hoses at the rear and was driven by a four-cylinder engine of fifty horsepower. Production started in 1938, and from 1942 a simplified BZ-38U variant was built.
The kits of this maker are short-run, so expect the parts to need dry-fitting and cleaning up. Build the aircraft starting from the cockpit and the engine nacelles, and mask the glazing with tape or with ready-made masks. With the tanker truck we recommend assembling and painting the chassis before you seat the tank on it. Painting can be done with an airbrush: the aircraft in the Soviet two-tone upper scheme with a light underside, the truck in a uniform dark green. Keep the patina restrained — dust and mud on the chassis of the truck, wear marks on the wing of the aircraft where people walked.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
