The sheet Star Decals 1:72 Royal Artillery 2 carries markings for the observation tanks Sherman and Cromwell and for the Humber Scout Car reconnaissance vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
The second sheet of the British artillery pair from the anniversary series for the landings concerns the vehicles of artillery observers. It covers the Sherman and Cromwell observation tanks and, with them, the light Humber Scout Car reconnaissance vehicle.
An artillery observation tank looked from the outside like an ordinary fighting machine, but inside it carried radio sets and map equipment on top of that for the officer who directed the fire of distant batteries. To free up the room, it tended to have the gun replaced by a dummy and the supply of ammunition reduced. The Cromwell in this conversion rode with the armored divisions; the Sherman filled the same role with other formations. The Humber Scout Car was, against them, a small four-wheeled vehicle for a liaison man and for a quick move between posts. It is precisely this role that makes observation vehicles a rewarding detour from ordinary tank builds.
The vehicles of artillery observers tend to be wrapped in kit, tarpaulins and aerials, so plan the order of work in advance: markings first, then the hung-on extras. As soon as small parts are added to the hull, there are plenty of places you will no longer reach with a brush and water.
